Using San Francisco Public Transportation, California
One of the first things visitors do when they arrive in San Francisco is hop aboard a classic cable car for an iconic ride through the bustling city streets on this mode of transport that dates back to the 1800’s. It’s the only manually operated cable system left in the world today! In one ride you can feel the great history of San Francisco while conveniently getting to another destination on your itinerary.
There are several routes: the Powell-Hyde Routes travels from Fisherman’s Wharf up and over Nob Hill past Union Square down to Market Street; the Powell-Mason is similar but instead stops in North Beach; the California Route goes down California Street near the Ferry Terminal and the junction of Van Ness Street. Waits can be long during peak times, but at $6.00 per ride it is worth it to enjoy this one-of-a-kind way to get around town. You can also purchase passes for unlimited rides for one ($14), three ($22), or seven days ($28).
For something a little less pricey, do what the locals do and use Bay Area Rapid Transit (known as BART) or the city bus and trolley system (Muni). BART is a rail system that goes between the outer reaches of the Bay Area and the city center, but visitors can use it to go to San Francisco International Airport for fast connections ($8.25), and travel between Embarcadero, Civic Center and the Mission ($1.75 each way). Muni is very convenient and goes right to AT&T Park where the Giants, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge, and almost every major attraction in town. Fares are only $2.00 and many of the trolley cars along the waterfront are decked out in vintage style for a fun ride with a great view.
