One year after the historic and poignant Stonewall riots began in New York in 1969, the first Pride marches were held across the country—in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. San Francisco's long and storied LGBT history continues in 2014 with the 44th Annual Pride Celebration and Parade, which takes place on June 28th and 29th. Long considered the heart and soul of the city by the bay, The Fillmore has gone through a variety of changes through the years. It was first home to the likes of Billie Holliday and Count Basie—then passing on to the bebop of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. In the 60's, the neighborhood housed the counterculture kids: Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. The first jazz fest was held in 1985, after years of revitalization.
