The San Francisco Botanical Garden
Opened in 1954, the San Francisco Botanical Garden is a collaboration between the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society and San Francisco Recreation and Parks. The area's unique microclimate enables the garden to replicate and recreate conditions of the high-elevation tropical cloud forests of Central and South America and Southeast Asia. Flora from these regions flourish especially well here; the garden's Magnolia Collection is a fine example of this. The collection is recognized as the world's fourth most significant of its kind, and the finest outside of China. Through the grounds of the garden, as well as its many programs and events, the San Francisco Botanical Garden is continually cultivating the relationship between plants and people, deepening the need and understanding to conserve the Earth's ecological and biological heritage.
In addition to the plant collections, which are as vast as they are stunning, the San Francisco Botanical Garden also hosts a variety of special events and programs year-round, and has a fully operational loan library and bookstore. The Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture is Northern California's most comprehensive horticultural library, boasting over 27,000 volumes and 350 plant and garden periodicals. Join the Summer Reading Club to keep your mind active over the summer, or just pop in for a handy reference. The bookstore also carries gifts, treasures, local hiking, foraging, biking and gardening guides, and posters related to garden art exhibits. Visit for additional information.
