2013 Presidio History Night
Originally a Spanish Fort, the Presidio has withstood the Mexican-American war and World War II—not to mention served as a site for mission headquarters, training troops, and more. And most recently, it's transitioned into a semi-commercial, semi-public space, ending its 219 years of military usage.
Now, this one-of-a-kind park seeks to unite visitors and locals alike with American and world history. History buffs will enjoy listening to lectures featuring a handful of renowned historians throughout its six-month long schedule. Free and open to the public, the "Contemporary Historians at the Presidio" lecture series has two remaining speakers left for its 2013 season, which will conclude in late November.
On October 17th, historian Stephen Haller will discuss San Francisco's role in World War II and its last effects in his lecture entitled, Arsenal of Democracy: World War II in the Bay Area. Haller will reflect on the remnants of the war, touching on subjects like the remaining military bases, ships and shipbuilding facilities left throughout San Francisco. He will also explore the political, social, and military impact of World War II.
Then in November, Cameron Binkley will host an annual talk honoring former Presidio historian Redmond Kernan. A civil engineer, Kernan played a large role in the historic preservation of the Presidio, sitting on councils and helping transform the military base into a park, before his death in 2009. Each lecture begins at 7 p.m. at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio. So come and explore the history of San Francisco's hidden jewel, the Presidio.
