Take a Cruise Down Lombard Street in San Francisco

Some San Francisco natives will claim that you haven’t truly experienced the city until you have ridden a cable car, toured Alcatraz, biked across the Golden Gate Bridge, and of course, cruised down Lombard Street in Russian Hill. This famously curvy road earned the title as “the crookedest street in the world”. The street was designed for safety reasons; the steep grade of the street called for a creative design. So, in the 1920s, the property owner of the area suggested a zigzag street be built to enhance both safety and appeal.

So, what can you do on Lombard St.? You can start by taking some scenic photos. From the bottom, you can capture some stills of the winding part of the road as cars come down. From the top of the hill, you will see grand vistas of the Bay Bridge and Coit Tower. For architecture lovers, this section of Lombard Street provides plenty of eye candy. The street features many famous homes, including the Real World house and Scotties Apartment from Vertigo, Hitchcock’s masterpiece. On either side of the street, you will find small, impeccably groomed yards and gardens outside each home.

Cruising down Lombard is an absolute must. It’s a fun little drive, but be prepared to sit in traffic. If you’re up for a workout, try a little stair climbing. Most visitors find it hard to make it all the way up without stopping to catch their breath. Are you up for the challenge? If you want to take the scenic route to the top, you can always catch a cable car. The Hyde Street cable car passes right by the top of Lombard Street, so you can catch it en route to Lombard Street from a nearby stop.
