Cable Cars San Francisco, California
One of the most fun things to do in San Francisco is ride on the historic Cable Cars, just steps from the King George Hotel. Jump on board one of the cable cars three lines - Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason, and California Street - that take you to San Francisco’s most popular neighborhoods and attractions, including North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, and Nob Hill.
The iconic Cable Cars in San Francisco were designated as a national landmark by the Smithsonian Institution in 1964 and run today using refurbished cars and new tracks and cables. Rather than self-powered, the cable cars move on the hilly San Francisco streets using an underground cable and gripping mechanism unique only to the cable cars in San Francisco.
Seeing the sights and sounds of San Francisco is a blast on the Cable Cars. The Powell-Hyde line begins at the Powell/Market turnaround to Bay Street at Fisherman’s Wharf. The Powell-Mason line also begins at the Powell/Market ending at Aquatic Park near Ghirardelli Square. The California Street line runs East-West from the Financial District to Van Ness Avenue. Tickets for the San Francisco cable car rides can be purchased by cash from the conductor or at turnaround stations.
