Micro- and nano-breweries have taken experimentation among the masses to a whole other level. These breweriesblend nearby products and the area's history with its brews—no easy feat for companies attempting to make beer a more “personable” experience. Take, for example, Almanac, Moonlight Brewing Company, and Anchor Steam Brewery, which produce seasonal brews, incorporate nearby nature (such as twigs, bark, etc.), and celebrate its long-lived history, respectively, for each of its crafts.

Of course, if you're a stout-lover, don't forget to enjoy more San Francisco beer during Beer Week or International Beer Fest. These two festivals culminate the bay area's tribute to Americans' long-standing fascination with the finest ales and lagers, beginning with beer's history from the 1900s onward. This classic tourist destination is a veritable hotbed of Bay Area history. What makes this tiny plot of land in the middle of San Francisco Bay so compelling is that it’s the former home of the most famous federal penitentiary in America. In business from 1934 until 1963, it was where such infamous prisoners as Al “Scarface” Capone, George &Quot;Machine Gun&Quot; Kelly, and Robert Franklin Stroud, aka the Birdman of Alcatraz, resided. Okay, the history lesson is over. Now it’s time to tell you about getting to Alcatraz: The island is about a mile and a half from Fisherman’s Wharf. That’s the place you’ll catch the ferry that will take you there. Alcatraz Cruises provide the short but scenic ride there and back. The first ferry leaves at 9:30 a.m. with others available every half-hour.

Once you’re on Alcatraz Island, you’ll be able tour it as quickly or as leisurely as you’d like. A tour of the cell house, where actual prisoners lived, is pretty cool. While there haven’t been any prisoners at Alcatraz in 50 years, the place looks pretty much like it did back in the day. You’ll get to see highlights such as the main prison block, tiny cells (9 feet by x 5 feet), mess hall, library, and &Quot;dark holes,&Quot; home to solitary confinement row. It’s a good idea to get the audio tour, which provides invaluable information along with commentary from actual former inmates. The audio tour is available in English, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch, Mandarin, and German. There are also evening tours of Alcatraz. As for the weather, it’s much like San Francisco’s general weather- a bit unpredictable so play it safe and bring layers of clothes. And make sure to wear shoes that are comfortable as you’ll be on your feet quite a bit. St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and there’s no better way to celebrate this festive event than by attending San Francisco’s 162nd St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Irish Festival on Saturday, March 16, 2013. The parade gets underway at 11:30 a.m. on the corner of Market and Second Streets and it’s pretty darn popular. How popular? It attracts about 100,000 spectators. And it’s rather rollicking, too. Maybe not as rollicking as the San Francisco Giants World Series parades but it’s definitely something you do not want to miss. As for what you’ll see while watching the parade, it’s a combination of some pretty cool things. There will be more than 100 brightly colored floats, dazzling Irish dance troupes and some of the finest marching bands. San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White will be the Grand Marshall of the parade, which will feature a wide array of groups representing the Irish community from all around the Bay Area. Look out for youth organizations, schools, cultural groups, and representatives from the city’s police and fire departments.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will end at the Civic Center Plaza, where the equally poplar Irish Festival will already be in full swing as it starts one-half hour before the parade at 11:00 a.m. Running non-stop until 5:00 p.m., the festival serves up a Irish helping of history and culture along with a ton of fun things to do. For one, there will be plenty o’ live music from such eclectic sources as The Gas Men and The Hooks. What’s more, there will be arts and crafts exhibitors, cultural displays, and several booths from various non-profits representing the Irish community. Definitely don’t leave the kids at home as they’ll have plenty to do as well. Everything from children’s rides and jumpy houses to a petting zoo and pony rides will keep the little ones engaged. They’re sure to build up a big appetite, too, and that’s where the food and drink concession stands will surely come in handy. Clearly, there are plenty of activities to keep one busy at the 2013 San Francisco St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Irish Festival whose theme is “Honoring The Celtic Woman.” More details are available at http://sf.funcheap.com/san-franciscos-st-patricks-day-parade/.

San Francisco Beer Week

SF Beer Week is back! Celebrate the New Year, San Francisco Style!

If watching fireworks over the Bay is too low-key of a way to celebrate New Year's Eve, there are countless other options for you and yours to ring in the New Year. From starry cruises, to masquerade balls and &Quot;Beach Blanket&Quot; New Year's Eve parties, San Francisco is a dream come true for revelers of every fancy. Just be sure to plan your night accordingly, be safe, and use public transit whenever possible.
Where Are Some of the Best Parties?

Sail into the New Year on a California Twilight Cruise with Red and White Fleet. Start the night out right on a two-hour cruise from Pier 43 ½ as you watch the final sunset of 2012 burn into the Pacific Ocean, complete with live music, drinks, and appetizers. Then, either join Club Fugazi's &Quot;Beach Blanket Babylon&Quot; party in North Beach, full of champagne, truffles, and tons of laughs, or saunter over to Davies Symphony Hall for the annual New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball, where Michael Francis leads the orchestra, accompanied by soprano songstress, Susanna Phillips. It's a night of scintillating mystery, great music, and more. What Sort of Food Can I Expect?

All kinds! San Francisco is known for its diverse, cutting edge food culture, so the sky's the limit when it comes to what to expect. The best advice is if you see or hear about a place you want to try, ask if they're involved in Dine About Town. Participating dates, times, and menus vary at each venue. Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis

If you're not familiar with Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, or know the infamous painting only for its namesake film, you simply must pay a visit to this very special exhibition at San Francisco's de Young Museum. On loan from The Hague for the first time in years, de Young is the inaugural stop for these 35 masterworks from the Dutch Golden Age on their American tour.
What Makes This Show so Special?

The Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis has not lent out a large collection like this in over 30 years, and no one knows when they will again. On display in the exhibit is an extremely rare array of 17th-century paintings from the Dutch Republic, including Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Vase of Flowers by Rachel Ruysch, a lesser-known female painter of the time, restored especially for the tour. Laugh 'Til it Hurts at The Book of Mormon

One of the wildest, best-reviewed musicals of all time, The Book of Mormon has been taking the world by storm since it won nine Tony Awards in 2011. A controversial product of the minds who brought you South Park, Vogue magazine ranks the show &Quot;the funniest musical of all time,&Quot; while The New York Times raves, &Quot; It's the best musical of this century.&Quot; Chances are you've heard the same from friends who've seen it, or if you have, you can't wait to see it again, and there's no place like the beautifully historic Curran Theatre to roll in the aisles!

How Can I Get Tickets?

Many shows are sold out, but there's still hope that you can catch The Book of Mormon before it leaves town. Due to popular demand, there is a pre-show lottery before every performance. New Year's Eve 2012 - Fireworks Over San Francisco Bay

Every New Year's Eve, 200,000 revelers huddle together on the waterfront to kiss the last year goodbye, and ring in the next with a free 15-minute barrage of fireworks over the San Francisco Bay at the stroke of midnight. The same artists who designed the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th Anniversary Show are orchestrating the event, so it's guaranteed to be a blast - literally! There's even going to be synchronized music playing from speakers positioned along the promenade from Pier 14 to the Bay Bridge, making the night a delight for all the senses.

Where's the Best Place to View of the Fireworks?

Because the show is in the sky, launched from barges 1,000 feet into the Bay, there aren't many bad spots to watch, except right in front of the Ferry Building near Pier 14. The best place to be is south of Sinbad's Restaurant, up and down Embarcadero, between Mission Street and Folsom. Be sure you arrive no later than 11:30pm to secure the best spot available to farewell 2012 and welcome 2013 in style!

San Francisco Symphony Holiday Concerts

Music is the soul of the holiday season. neighborhoods in America and is just steps from the King George Hotel! As the
largest Chinese community outside of Asia, Chinatown SF dates back to the
middle of the nineteenth century. The history of Chinatown in San Francisco
starts with arrival of thousands of Chinese at the dawn of the California Gold
Rush in 1848. Many of these immigrants went on to help build the
transcontinental railroad. Shortly after the turn of the twentieth century, the
neighborhood was almost completely destroyed by the 1906 earthquake. After the
disaster, local businessmen sought to expand the financial district and move
the Chinese residents to another part of the city. But the community banded
together and saw the completion of the landmark Sing Chong and Sing Fat
buildings that signified the residents’ commitment to stay in the area.

The Bank of Canton, formerly the Chinese Telephone
Exchange, has also become an iconic landmark. The structure closed when
switchboards gave way to more “modern” rotary phones. The Bank of Canton bought
the restored the building in 1960. Today the neighborhood is a wonderful place
for souvenir shopping and sight seeing. Several organizations offer walking
tours, including All About Chinatown and Wok Wiz. Explore Chinatown’s famous
alleys, houses of worship, and of course shops and restaurants. It’s no
surprise that you’ll find the best Chinese food in this iconic neighborhood.

Some San Francisco natives will claim that you haven’t truly experienced the city until you have ridden a cable car, toured Alcatraz, biked across the Golden Gate Bridge, and of course, cruised down Lombard Street in Russian Hill. This famously curvy road earned the title as “the crookedest street in the world”. The street was designed for safety reasons; the steep grade of the street called for a creative design. So, in the 1920s, the property owner of the area suggested a zigzag street be built to enhance both safety and appeal.

So, what can you do on Lombard St.? You can start by taking some scenic photos. From the bottom, you can capture some stills of the winding part of the road as cars come down. From the top of the hill, you will see grand vistas of the Bay Bridge and Coit Tower. For architecture lovers, this section of Lombard Street provides plenty of eye candy. The street features many famous homes, including the Real World house and Scotties Apartment from Vertigo, Hitchcock’s masterpiece. On either side of the street, you will find small, impeccably groomed yards and gardens outside each home.

Cruising down Lombard is an absolute must. It’s a fun little drive, but be prepared to sit in traffic. If you’re up for a workout, try a little stair climbing. Most visitors find it hard to make it all the way up without stopping to catch their breath. Are you up for the challenge? If you want to take the scenic route to the top, you can always catch a cable car. The Hyde Street cable car passes right by the top of Lombard Street, so you can catch it en route to Lombard Street from a nearby stop.

Nightlife in San Francisco

Live Your Nightlife in San Francisco

San Francisco Hotel’s California Green Lodging Program. The King George Hotel is pleased to be a Certified Green
Hotel and associated with the California Green Lodging Program. But what does
this mean? Every year, hotels around the world produce an enormous amount of
waste. The goals of the Program are to reduce that waste, diverting it from
landfills, while at the same time conserving energy and water. At King George,
we offer guests of our San Francisco boutique hotel a number of ways to help
the planet. These includes sustainable bath products, reduction in water flow,
reminders that guests may reuse their bath towels rather than having them
changed daily, energy efficient fixtures, recycling receptacles, and on the
back-end, composting. Furthermore, the California Green Lodging Program
encourages travelers to seek out the most economical and eco-friendly ways of
traveling, as well as assistance with securing meeting and conference spaces.
The Department of General Services, part of the State Travel Program, operates
the California Green Lodging Program.

Boutique Hotel

<img src=&Quot;/resourcefiles/blogsmallimages/boutique-hotel-sm.jpg&Quot; alt=&Quot;Boutique Hotel&Quot; class=&Quot;imgright&Quot; height=&Quot;115&Quot; width=&Quot;182&Quot; />

Square. Shopping, dining, and
entertainment are what you’ll find in the gorgeous San Francisco neighborhood
of Union Square. Union Square itself is a picturesque 2.5-acre plaza with

The San Francisco Giants
made the Bay Area proud in 2010, bringing home the World Series championship
for the first time since moving to California in 1957. Beautiful AT&T Park
is the Giants’ home ballpark, and is located on San Francisco Bay with amazing
views of Treasure Island, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and the Oakland
Hills. AT&T Park boasts gourmet concession stands as well as ballpark
favorites like hot dogs, beer, pretzels, Cracker Jacks, and malted ice cream. A
fun family activity area offers four slides that run through a giant Coke
bottle, batting cages, and a miniature playing field. The Giants’ season runs
from April with exhibition games through September or October, depending on
whether or not they earn a playoff berth. Team favorites Tim Lincecum, Buster
Posey, and Pablo Sandoval are looking forward to a stellar 2012 season, and so
