First performed in 1892 at the Imperial
Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, Tchaikovsky’s
ballet The Nutcracker made its
American debut on Christmas Eve, 1944 at San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera
House. The San Francisco Ballet performance has been a Bay Area holiday
tradition ever since! It’s the timeless take of Clara and the nutcracker she
receives as a gift from her Godfather Herr Drosselmeyer on Christmas Eve. The
magic begins when Clara falls asleep by the Christmas tree and awakens to the
sight of her nutcracker leading a regiment of gingerbread soldiers against the
army of the Mouse King.
